14 iconic Indian movies to screen at Festival Des 3 Continents, France

Hallelujah Cinephiles! We come bearing exciting news from the movie fraternity of India. An assortment of 14 highly reputed movies from Indian cinema will be screened this year at the 44th edition of Festival des 3 Continents, between November 18 – 27, 2022, in Nantes, France. The prestigious festival reflects the complexity and diversity behind outstanding filmmaking. Radical filmmakers who rebelled against the constraints of commerce and created films with an artistic and political impact have left a legacy that must be cherished and revived, and the film festival aims to celebrate those movies.

A voyage through Indian cinema of the 1970s and 1990s

Indian cinema has been diverse and quite flamboyant since the beginning. Some of the acclaimed works which were selected from the 70’s to screen at prestigious festival include ‘Thamp’, ‘Kummatty’, ‘Agraharathil Kazhuthai’, ‘Amma Ariyan’, ‘Thaneer Thaneer’, ‘Titash Ekti Nadir Naam’, ‘Ashad Ka Ek Din’, ‘Khandhar’, ‘Om-Dar-B-Dar’, ‘Hun Hunshi Hunshilal’, ’36 Chowringhee Lane’, ‘Utsav’, ‘Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastan’ and ‘Disha’.

Among the Indian directors who’s films will be screened are Ritwik Ghatak, Aravindan Govindan, John Abraham and Saeed Akhtar Mirza.

The selection reflects the complexity and diversity of Indian cinema and we have attempted to capture in a microcosm the vast breadth of Indian cinema. These radical filmmakers who rebelled against the constraints of commerce and created films with an artistic and political impact have left a legacy that must be cherished and revived.

Festival des 3 Continents

This ten day long, Festival des 3 Continents, has a legacy which goes back almost 40 years. Apart from showcasing intriguing cinematic masterpieces from around the world, here you’ll get to meet people with similar appreciation for non-commercialised movie crafts. Films like Hirokazu Kore-eda (Japan), Souleymane Cisse (Mali), Hou Hsiao-hsien (Taiwan), Abbas Kiarostami (Iran), Wong Kar-wai (Hong Kong), Jia Zhang-ke (China) and Wang Bing (China) amongst others have already made their way to this festival.

African, Latin American and Asian movies to screen at the festival

The festival will also highlight a wide range of dramas and documentaries from Africa, Latin America, and Asia in a programme of some 90 feature films, many of which are rare and will premiere at the festival. In addition to the Official Selection of recent films, the Festival will host an homage to renowned Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu KORE-EDA (Shoplifters, 2018 Palme d’Or at Cannes), whose documentary works are little known.
