The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has undertaken the beautification and revamping of three naturally existing lakes in the city. The three lakes up for a makeover are Gauripada, Nilje and Umbarde. Reportedly a budget of ₹6 crores has been allotted with the aim to provide proper facilities around the lakes for residents and to conserve them.

Late in January 2022, an incident of the death of hundreds of turtles at the Gauripada Lake in Kalyan sent shockwaves across the state. A month after the incident, a laboratory report suggested water pollution and the presence of different bacteria in the body parts of the turtles as the reason behind their death. The walls of the lake were concretised and beautified by the civic body two years ago.
As per reports, another reason for the pollution in water could be the negligence by the locals, especially during festivals. Experts in the city voiced their concerns regarding the supposed revamping and claimed that the lake beautification should not just be about construction but also aim at the conservation of the water body and its species.

Gauripada lake, located in Kalyan (W) sprawling over an area of 22,915 sqm is widely known for fishing activity. Many local fishermen rely on this lake for their daily earnings. However, there has been a reduction in fish activities in the last 3 years, owing to the bad water quality of the lake.
Umbarde lake sprawls across an area of 29,915 sqm and will have its silt removed as part of the beautification and water conservation. The KDMC also has plans to set up a bird-watching facility by planting 9,000 saplings by the lake.
Spread across 12,000 sqm, Nilje lake will also have a spot for bird watching in the future. Popularly known as the Shri Mauli Lake, the water body is known for its scenic beauty with lots of trees and greenery. Over a period of time, the has become popular for cycling, walking and jogging.
