A 3-month long study conducted by the blood bank of the government Maharaja Yashwantrao hospital (MYH) in the heart of the Indore city has revealed a gradual increase in resistance to the infection of coronavirus among common people. An analysis of the data showed that out of a total of 4,041 samples of new blood deposited in the MYH blood bank in the last three months, IgG (immunoglobulin G) antibodies were found in 29 per cent (1,179) samples. IgG antibodies are the most commonly found antibody among others. Found in the blood and other bodily fluids, these defend the human body against the invasion of foreign bacteria and virus. According to research, IgG takes time to form after an infection or immunization.
Month-on-month rise in immunity against COVID-19
The MYH blood bank collected blood samples each month, starting from September until November, checking the people for antibodies against the infection. According to the head of the blood bank, the institute tested 1,323, 1,1128 and 1590 blood samples during September, October, and November respectively, detecting IgGs antibodies against COVID-19 in 197, 367 and 615 samples respectively. He also highlighted the city’s month on month improvement in immunity against the transmission of the coronavirus infection.
The blood samples for this study were randomly selected, including the specimens of people aged between 18 to 60 years. However, samples of recovered coronavirus patients for not included in this study to test the organic development of antibodies among the people. The head of the blood bank said that ELISA kits, approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), were used to check the antibodies.
Better results than the city serosurvey
This recent study has yielded better results than the serosurvey conducted in the city between August 11 and 23. The serosurvey recognised seroprevalence in only 7.72% of 7,103 participants. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) of the central government had assisted to collect the samples of this test group.
At present, a total of 47,427 confirmed COVID-19 patients have been found in Indore district, out of which, about 5,175 continue to receive active treatment in the city. Indore has so far successfully discharged about 41,453 patients from treatments in hospitals, covid care centres and home isolation. The city has witnessed 799 fatalities since the outbreak of the deadly virus.
