To improve monsoon commute, MMRDA removes almost 34,000 barricades from Mumbai Metro sites

The barricades have been removed from various locations; check details here.

To improve transportation efficiency during Mumbai's monsoon season, the Mumbai Metro Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has removed 33,922 barricades. Reportedly, these barricades were lifted from routes spanning a total length of 84 kilometres (42 km on each side of the roads). The project was completed within a month by MMRDA, effectively creating additional space for commuters.

In which areas have the barricades been lifted?

The barriers were initially placed across a 152.8 km-long stretch, by the city authorities for the construction of Mumbai metro lines 2B, 4, 4A, 5, 6, 7A and 9.

However, even after the completion of the work, these barricades remained in place, causing continued road obstructions. Now, the authorities have removed the barricades across some routes, to free up road space - facilitating smoother vehicular movement.

The barricades have been removed from various locations of the metropolis, including: Eastern Express Highway, Western Express Highway, Bandra Kurla Complex, SV Road, VN Purv Marg (Chembur Naka), New Link Road, Gulmohar Road, MG Road, Ghodbunder Road, Kapur Bawadi, Balkum, Dahisar, Mira Road, Bhayander, Thane, Tin Hat Naka, JVLR, Infinity Mall, Powai, Kanjur Marg and Mankhurd.

MMRDA takes additional steps to tackle road-related concerns

Vehicular commute in Mumbai becomes difficult due to heavy rainfall every year - causing waterlogging and traffic congestion. Potholes and deteriorating road conditions further increase the risk of accidents. Notably, these barricades further worsened commuters' woes during this season.

Now, 60% of the barricades have been removed from the 152.8 km-long stretch, as per reports. Along with this, the MMRDA has taken additional steps to tackle road-related concerns in the city.

The measures include - repairing potholes, installing motor pumps in areas prone to waterlogging to improve drainage efficiency and setting up a 24x7 emergency control room to address citizen complaints.
