The Indian Institute of Technology, Indore has managed to bag patents for two cost-effective power devices, High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs) and Fingerprint acquisition system. These devices will cater to the needs of developing next-generation electric vehicles (EVs), 5G/6G telecommunication systems, space technologies and advanced anti-theft biometry based devices.

Revolutionising High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs)

One of the lead inventors, Prof. Shaibal Mukherjee informed that the fabrication technique that they have patented will revolutionise the areas requiring high voltage and high frequency. With the help of indigenously developed High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs), the total cost of importing such stable and efficient transistors required in power electronics will be drastically reduced.

The institute also believes that this will encourage the country’s Make in India initiative, making it more self-reliant in the fields of telecommunication, Electric vehicles (EVs), space technology and security. The indigenously developed HEMT technology has gone under the tech marketing phase of the commercialisation process. With a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 15.2%, the market for HEMT technology is expected to reach $2.8 billion by 2026.

Alongside Mukherjee, the team that developed advanced HEMT technology comprised of Prof. Abhinav Kranti and PhD students Md Arif Khan and Rohit Singh from the Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Indore.

With the continuous advancement of Information Technology (IT), biometric technology has become a crucial part of safety-related applications, such as public security, criminal investigations, access control systems, government identity certification and terrorism prevention and detection. With an aim to build on those lines, IIT-Indore has developed a Fingerprint Acquisition System that works on the concept of time-series dynamic speckle image patterns.

The invention addresses technical problems by reducing, the match rejection rate and avoiding data leakage as the new technique does not store data as compared to the conventional technique. The team to develop the fingerprint acquisition technique was led by Dr. Amit Chatterjee from IIT-Indore, along with Prof. Vimal Bhatia and Prof. Shashi Prakash from IET DAVV.

Centre’s aim to boost manufacturing in India

The central government’s Performance Linked Incentives (PLI) scheme will accelerate the process of electronic manufacturing which in turn will increase the demand for high-performance semiconductors in India and around the world. The recent shortage of semiconductor material (chip crunch) has led many electronic companies to expand manufacturing units in this sphere.
