Hazardous tarballs surface on beaches of Mumbai & Goa yet again

The speedy monsoon winds have washed ashore the hazardous blobs of black oils as tarballs across the Mumbai and Goa coastal periphary. Several beaches in Goa, including those popular among tourists like Anjuna, have formed a black sticky carpet of tarballs raising concerns across. Reportedly, a similar phenomenon has been witnessed across some of the most prominent beaches of Mumbai as well. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has excavated more than 20,000 kg of tarballs from Juhu and Versova beaches in Mumbai this month.

Private lands in Goa can now be transformed into forested areas by paying a fee

Aiming for an improved and strengthened ecosystem, the Goa government has rolled out a new initiative to boost the state's green cover, based on a partnership between citizens and the administrative authorities. As per reports, citizens can now pay the Goa State Biodiversity Board for converting their lands into cultivated areas. Reportedly, the officials will not only plant trees but also ensure proper care and maintenance for them.

Know all about INS Hansa, Indian Navy Station in Goa with a history of 6 decades!

In a moment of pride for Goa, one of the Indian Navy's prominent air stations situated in the coastal state, INS Hansa marked its diamond jubilee last week. Located near Dabolim, it is India's biggest naval airbase which was set up with Sea Hawk, Alize, and Vampire aircraft at Coimbatore in 1958. Later, it was commissioned as INS Hansa on September 5, 1961. Post the liberation of Goa, the Navy took over Dabolim airfield in April 1962 and the INS Hansa was moved to Dabolim in June 1964.

License fee cut by 50% for beach shacks in Goa to compensate for pandemic losses

For the second consecutive year, the government of Goa has reduced the beach shack fees by 50% to help the owners deal with the losses, due to the ongoing pandemic. According to the Goa shack policy, an operator has to pay up to ₹ 1 lakh as a licence fee, subject to the size and the neighbourhood of the cabin. With a reduction in the inflow of foreign tourists, many shack operators are incurring losses and now, this move will bring some respite for them.
