70-year-old building housing Bandra’s Mamagoto restaurant, demolished for Hill Road widening
In a bold move to ease traffic congestion, Mumbai authorities demolished a 70-year-old building housing the popular Mamagoto restaurant on Bandra's Hill Road. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cited the structure as a major bottleneck, reducing the road width from 27 to 13 metres.
The demolition, part of a systematic effort to widen Hill Road, affected 12 commercial units and two residential apartments. All occupants were served a final notice on June 15 and were provided alternative accommodations, before the demolition date.
Bandra West MLA hailed the action as a priority for addressing the area's persistent traffic woes. Local community leaders also praised the civic body's decision, emphasising the importance of improved traffic flow for the neighbourhood's schools, hospitals, and churches.
While the demolition marks a significant step towards alleviating congestion, challenges remain as road parking continues to impede traffic despite available pay-and-park facilities.
