The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) team achieved a significant milestone by successfully launching the second longest Orthotropic Steel Deck (OSD), on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). This engineering marvel weighs as much as six large aircrafts, and is the 2nd longest OSD in Mumbai to be strengthened or stiffened both transversely and longitudinally. It is a significant milestone that MMRDA Team has achieved for the MTHL.
2nd longest Orthotropic Steel Deck in Mumbai
This marks to be the 2nd longest OSD 45 structure to be launched on the under-construction sea link, which is 180 metres long and weighs 2400 MT. The one before this was launched in April, 2022. A total of 32 OSDs are to be erected under the MTHL project, and this was the 14th, as per MMRDA. Steel decks are being used to ensure that ships traversing the channel adjoining the MTHL have space to pass under the bridge.
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link project, a six-lane sea link, will connect the Mumbai Bay from Sewri to Chirle in Navi Mumbai (Navi Mumbai airport) and is expected to conclude by the end of 2023!

Why orthotropic steel decks are better than concrete bridges
For better understanding, an orthotropic steel deck is basically a superstructure, longitudinally stiffened to carry heavy vehicular load efficiently. An OSD structure offers better load carrying capacity and are lesser in weight, hence, is a preferable option when compared to a concrete bridge.
