As a part of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP), a 550-meter-long underpass is currently under construction at Worli’s J K Kapur Chowk. This passageway is set to provide direct access between Coastal Road and Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), for motorists travelling from Prabhadevi and ease for south-bound traffic as well.
The project aims to enhance south-bound Mumbai traffic flow
Designed to facilitate south-bound traffic, the vehicular underpass entry will be near J K Kapur Chowk, close to the proposed Worli-Sewri Connector. Exit points are planned near the Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk, linking with the Worli interchange arms to access BWSL or the southbound MCRP towards Nariman Point. This marks the second underground road project within the MCRP, in addition to the existing 2-kilometer-long undersea tunnels connecting Marine Drive and Priyadarshini Park (PDP).The project, Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road, saw its initial segment inaugurated on March 11.
With a width of 11 meters, the underpass is a pivotal component of the ₹13,893-crore coastal road project. Construction, utilising the Austrian-Tunnelling method, is progressing towards an October deadline. This tunnel, dedicated to southbound traffic, promises to significantly reduce travel time for commuters navigating towards the western suburbs or the southern tip of Mumbai.
