Just like the smell of old books, hearing the clicking sound of a typewriter brings a sense of nostalgia. Passing through life, many things often take a backseat, but this is not the case for Indore‘s Rajesh Sharma. With over 400 typewriters, Mr. Sharma has created a Typewriter Museum, in Indore, to showcase his love for these vintage machines.
He even owns an antique piece from Remington, the first company ever to bring typewriters in the market. In case you’re wondering just how valuable that is, in July, 2014, a Remington No. 1 was sold for nearly $27,000 at an auction on eBay.
Huge collection of vintage typewriters dating back to 1890s
The journey of this typewriter enthusiast started ten years back, with only three to four typewriters. Inspired by his father who would sit outside the Indore District Court, typing away on his office piano, Mr. Sharma decided to prolong his legacy, and in turn, his love for typewriters.
Mr. Rajesh Sharma possesses some distinctive pieces in his collection, including the American English Typewriter from 1890s. The museum boasts of 400 vintage typewriters from India, as well as from America, England, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and China.
Some of the most prized pieces from his collection include – the Mercedes Typewriter (1922), Corona Typewriter (1913), Royal Company (1922), Tramp Company Typewriters (1960 to 2000). Apart from this, you’ll also find Godrej and Remington typewriters here.
The purpose of this museum is to reminisce the feeling of typing on a typewriter in a dimly lit room, with a glass of whiskey beside. A place for younger generation to sit and give their imaginative canvas a chance to breathe.
