9 places that show Lucknow’s colourful, quirky & creative Side

Beyond the postcard, a more colourful, creative Lucknow awaits.

Say “Lucknow” and most people picture the same postcard, Nawabi arches, kebabs, chikankari stoles, maybe a tomb or two. All true, all a little tired by now. What that picture leaves out is a city that’s been quietly getting weirder and more colourful in the background, scrap metal welded into monuments, shipping containers turned into murals, a planetarium shaped like Saturn, metro stations that moonlight as galleries, entire back lanes repainted just because someone decided they should be. Nine spots, one theme: Lucknow’s creative streak isn’t hiding in a museum somewhere, it’s out on the street, on the walls, on the way to catch your train. The old-world postcard is still there, it’s just not the whole story anymore.

The Container Art Zone & Painted Crates at Riverfront Park

Shipping containers are built to look exactly the same everywhere, stackable, industrial, forgettable by design. Someone at Gomti Nagar Riverfront clearly disagreed. Near Old Chatori Gali, a cluster of those same containers and crates now wear full-blown graffiti and theme murals, turned into an open-air gallery that has nothing to do with cargo and everything to do with getting your reel views up. The rest of the riverfront plays along, landscaped corners, painted walls, sunset views on the side, but the containers are the part nobody expects, and that’s exactly why they work.

Lucknow Museum of Heritage and Art

Old Lucknow doesn’t usually make room for anything new, it’s all crumbling facades and centuries-old monuments doing their own thing. Then, right opposite the Hussainabad Clock Tower, a genuinely new building showed up anyway: LMHA, the Lucknow Museum of Heritage and Art, thirteen galleries deep in Nawabi history, Chikankari craft, and Awadhi culture, told through interactive audio-visual installations instead of static plaques. It’s a museum about the past that refuses to look or feel like one. Old Lucknow got a new neighbour, and somehow it fits right in.

UP Darshan Park

Old vehicle parts, rusted almirahs, discarded iron scraps, on any given day, that’s just scrap waiting for a dealer. At UP Darshan Park, it’s raw material for the Taj Mahal. This eco-park has quietly built sixteen miniature replicas of UP’s biggest monuments, the Taj, Bara Imambara, Ayodhya Ram Mandir among them, entirely out of metal junk that would’ve otherwise ended up melted down or forgotten. It’s UP’s cultural highlight reel, shrunk down and welded together from things nobody wanted twice.

Harmony Park

Parks are supposed to be where the city goes quiet, walking paths, benches, maybe a fountain minding its own business. Harmony Park, near Ekana Stadium in CG City, skipped that memo entirely. Over 30 giant musical installations, chimes, drums, wind instruments, all recycled and all fully playable, turn a walk through the premises into something closer to an accidental jam session. Nobody’s forcing you to play anything, but good luck walking past a giant working drum and not trying it. Recycled junk, reimagined as an orchestra you can wander through.

Happiness Park

Calling something a “secret spot” usually oversells it, until you actually find this one, tucked along Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Hasanganj, and realise it might’ve earned the title. It’s a full waste-to-wonder setup: hyper-colourful retro sets, a toy train track, quirky recycled sculptures, an entire emoji-themed corner, all built for the specific purpose of making your camera work harder. Nothing here is trying to be subtle. It’s scrap turned into set design, and somehow it still counts as a hidden gem.

Indira Gandhi Planetarium

Most planetariums are content to be a plain dome that shows you the sky. Lucknow’s version, on the Gomti’s banks in Suraj Kund, decided the building itself should also make a point, it’s shaped like Saturn, rings and all, which means you’re looking at a planet before you’ve even stepped inside to see the rest of them. Once in, projection-tech light shows and cosmic exhibits do the rest, bringing the night sky down to a riverside plot in the middle of the city. The architecture isn’t subtle, neither is the universe, really.

Janeshwar Mishra Park main gate to G20 Road Corridor

Every city has a stretch of road that exists purely to get you from one place to another, nobody stops, nobody looks. The G20 corridor leading up to Janeshwar Mishra Park’s main gate refused that fate. What was built as prep for a summit now functions as a permanent public gallery, scrap-metal sculptures, vibrant murals, landscaped corners lining both sides of the sidewalk, all sitting on a stretch most people would otherwise just drive straight through. It’s a commute route that accidentally became a destination.

Lucknow Metro Heritage Station / Metro Art Installations

Metro stations exist to move people through them as fast as possible, nobody’s supposed to linger. Lucknow’s system seems to disagree. Hazratganj Station comes dressed in Kathak-inspired motifs and chikankari detailing, practically demanding a second look before you catch your train, while Charbagh, Sachivalaya, Mawaiya, and the CCS Airport station each carry their own architectural nods to the city’s history. It’s the rare transit system that’s trying to slow you down, not speed you up, turning a daily commute into a rotating gallery you didn’t ask for but won’t mind.

Lucknow Municipal Corporation murals & painted back lanes

Back lanes exist to be ignored, that’s basically their job description. Nobody plans a visit to a boundary wall. Lucknow’s municipal corporation apparently missed that memo, running beautification drives across Aliganj, Kapoorthala, Gomti Nagar, Alambagh, Rajajipuram, Chowk, and stretches around Lohia Path and Parivartan Chowk, turning plain walls into murals of Kathak dancers, chikankari motifs, and Nawabi architecture. There’s no single address for this one, it’s less a destination, more a city-wide trail that started with a few forgotten lanes and just kept going.
