Kanpur has waited a long time to stop being the exception on the five-star map, and that wait just got a lot shorter. The Kanpur Development Authority has approved the building plan for the city’s first-ever luxury hotel, a Taj property, clearing a file that had been stuck in the system for close to two years.
₹800 Crore, 200 rooms and Kanpur’s long-awaited five-star moment
The project belongs to JK Urbanscapes Developers (JK Group), which tied up with the Indian Hotels Company Limited back in June 2024 to make this happen. The hotel will occupy 6.6 acres on Kalpi Road, right next to Kamla Club, with ₹800 crore riding on it. Work starts this Sawan month, with a three-year clock now running, 200 rooms, a 3,205 sq m patch of green, and about 500 jobs waiting at the other end of it.
It’ll also mark IHCL’s third address in the city, joining Seleqtions and Ginger, except this time, Kanpur finally gets the flagship.
