Lucknow grapples with severe waterlogging issues every monsoon, affecting nearly all areas, including prominent stretches and VVIP zones. In response, the city administration has devised a comprehensive plan to overhaul the drainage system, with substantial funds being allocated for the development process.
As part of these efforts, experts from IIT Roorkee were brought in to design a drainage plan near the High Court, leading to the commencement of improvements in the area. The team of experts will also assist the civic authorities in improving the city-wide drainage framework.

The drainage system in Lucknow continues to struggle, with even planned localities like Gomti Nagar facing severe waterlogging. Last year, the Marine Drive area of Gomti Nagar experienced flooding despite extremely wide roads consisting of stormwater drainages.

The situation has been so dire that the government buildings, like the Lucknow Municipal Corporation office in Lalbagh and the High Court complex, have been inundated multiple times, prompting the court to express its displeasure.

Similarly, several VIP zones also remain vulnerable to waterlogging. During last year’s monsoon, the Vidhan Bhavan complex was inundated, and the situation escalated to such an extent, that even Raj Bhavan faced significant water accumulation.

Moreover, nearly all residential areas in the city have a long-standing history of waterlogging during monsoons, highlighting the urgent need for improvements in the city’s overall drainage system.
Work on Qila Mohammadi Drain to kick off soon
As part of the overhaul process, LMC will soon begin redeveloping the Qila Mohammadi Drain to address severe waterlogging in areas such as Aashiana, Alambagh, Sarojini Nagar and nearby localities, benefiting nearly 8 lakh residents.
The drain, spanning 8.35 km serves several key localities, including Azad Nagar, Bangla Bazar, LDA Colony, Krishna Nagar, Hind Nagar, Transport Nagar, Aashiana Colony, Ratan Khand, Rajani Khand, Airport, Omaxe City, and Durgapuri.
