Mumbai Airport or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set to demolish Terminal 1 in November 2025 as part of a major redevelopment project to meet the increasing demands of India’s aviation sector. The project is scheduled for completion by 2028-29, with Phase 1 commencing in November 2025. Here’s what travellers can expect:
Redevelopment Impact
As CSMIA T1 goes through its transformation, passenger traffic from T1 will be distributed. Approximately 5 million passengers will be moved to T2, while the remaining 10 million will be shifted to Navi Mumbai Airport, slated to open in 2025-26.
Further, technology like DigiYatra, self-baggage drop counters and e-gates, will be employed to keep passenger flow effortless. A team of additional service staff will be stationed at key points to ensure smooth passenger flow.
T1 revamp to be completed by 2028-29
The complete overhaul of Terminal 1 (T1) at Mumbai Airport is set to be finished by 2028-29, with a capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually. The revamped terminal will feature a built-up area of over two million square feet, incorporating a biophilic design that brings nature indoors, expansive open spaces, and abundant natural light.
The architecture will be inspired by Mumbai’s coastal spirit. The renewed terminal will be a Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH), linking air, rail, and road networks with direct metro access and underground bus stations for better connectivity.
Tech-forward upgrades will include DigiYatra, self-baggage drops, district cooling systems, advanced electrical substations, and an upgraded baggage handling system, all aimed at improving operational efficiency for both passengers and airlines.
