In a major boost for India’s gem and jewellery sector, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will launch hand carriage jewellery exports from May 1, 2025. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) formalised the process via Circular No. 09/2025-Customs, allowing exporters to carry high-value jewellery personally.
Dedicated GJEPC airport office to assist members
A successful mock drill was conducted on April 24, with the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Bharat Diamond Bourse, and Customs officials simulating a passenger export scenario. Kirti Bhansali, GJPEC chairman, hailed the move as a new era for exporters, especially MSMEs. A dedicated GJEPC airport office will assist members with the new hand-carry procedures.
The upcoming SOP from Mumbai Customs is expected to streamline operations further, reinforcing India’s growing status as a global jewellery hub.
