In an official order released by the Ministry of Housing Affairs on January 6, Kanpur was ranked in the Top-10 Smart Cities of India, for the month of December. The erstwhile Manchester of East has bagged the 8th position in the nation and 3rd in the state, bringing a moment of pride for the city dwellers.
Reportedly, Kanpur has shown immense progress in just one month for it was standing at rank 13 as of November. The city is now looking to make another quantum leap in the coming month with a host of newly launched projects under review.

Kanpur Smart City Rankings in 2021 have scaled through several ups and down to balance at no.8 in December. In May, the city was listed at position 16, which dipped further to 18th in July, By November, this number has risen up to rank 13 and improved immensely by 5 positions in December 2021.
The Smart City Nodal Officer of Kanpur, RK Singh has further highlighted that the January rankings will be further higher as there are plenty of completed civic projects in Kanpur which were not listed for online review.
Smart City projects take-off in Kanpur

Projects worth ₹900 crores have been launched under the Kanpur Smart City banner and several of these have been successfully completed as well. Reportedly, the December rankings were pushed up by the completion of the Water Supply and Electric Supply schemes in the city.
Other projects such as Smart Roads, Waste Water Recycling, E-Pathshala, iTriplecy and underground waste bins have also been completed in Kanpur. While the beautification process of Nana Rao Park and the Visitors Gallery at Green Park is in the pipeline, the bus charging station will also be completed in the next months.
Smart City Rankings of 2021
As per national rankings, Bhopal and Varanasi rank as the first and second Smart Cities of the country. Following them are Surat, Ahemdabad and Dehradun, in the top-5. Indore, Agra, Kanpur, Vadodara and Salem are lined up in the same order, for the top-10. This puts 3 UP cities – Varanasi, Agra and Kanpur among the trailblazers. Prayagraj district has also fared well and ranks at no. 24 in the list.
