As a much-appreciated move amidst this lockdown in the city, Lucknow Nagar Nigam has arranged for vans which will distribute free sanitary napkins for women hailing from underprivileged backgrounds, in different areas. Since many pharmacies are running out of this basic commodity and online shopping portals aren’t delivering these essentials, this step was promptly undertaken by the concerned authorities.
What’s the Update?
The Lucknow district administration has taken a note of the concerns of women who have run out of napkins and have introduced 6 Sakhi Vans, which will be sent to slum areas where they’re highly required. Along with the free sanitary napkins, women will also be handed out soaps and hand sanitizers so that they can maintain strict levels of personal hygiene.
On Wednesday, District Magistrate Abhishek Prakash stated, “We learnt that during the lockdown, women and girls in some areas could not get sanitary napkins. We have prepared a route chart of those areas. The vans will reach there and provide them with free napkins, soaps and sanitizers.”
He further added that women who want to avail these essential items, can call on the helpline number- 7905323611 and the commodities will be delivered to them ASAP.
Knock Knock
Surprisingly, sanitary napkins were not a part of the list of ‘essential goods’ until the 29th of March which had caused a lot of uproar among the citizens. Meanwhile, the production of sanitary napkins had also undergone a direct hit because of this reason and several companies had shut down their factories since there was no clear instruction from the government.
We truly believe that this step was much-needed since because of course, women’s menstrual cycles can’t be contained in a lockdown and residents cannot step out to procure napkins due to the lockdown regulations.
