Travelling between Mumbai and Konkan or Western Maharashtra has become significantly more expensive this season, with private bus fares nearly doubling on several routes. Passengers travelling to Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur and Sangli have reported AC sleeper ticket prices crossing ₹3,000 due to rising diesel costs and heavy holiday demand.
Passengers Say Fares Have Nearly Doubled
Many travellers claimed the sudden surge has made emergency and family travel difficult to afford. A Mumbai-to-Lanja AC sleeper ticket, which usually costs around ₹1,200, recently went up to ₹3,000 for a 336 km journey. Passengers also pointed out that even during previous peak seasons, fares rarely crossed ₹2,000. With train tickets unavailable, flights already expensive and MSRTC buses overcrowded, private buses remain one of the few practical options for travellers.
Bus operators blame diesel prices & seasonal demand
Private bus operators said the fare revision was unavoidable due to rising operational costs. Diesel prices reportedly increased from ₹90 to ₹97.8 per litre within eight days. Operators also stated that expenses related to staff salaries, maintenance, tolls and RTO charges have further increased the financial burden. According to transport associations, nearly 50% of private buses are currently off the roads because operators are struggling to manage fuel costs and penalties.
Authorities warn of action against illegal fare hikes
Meanwhile, authorities have directed officials to take strict action against any reported instances of illegal fare hikes by private bus operators. Unfair pricing practices would not be tolerated, and strict measures would be taken against operators found violating rules.
