Before malls took over, THESE 11 things were peak in Lucknow

Before Lucknow became a city of endless choices, it ran on something quieter, familiarity that nobody had to build, it just existed. You didn’t scroll through options or check reviews, you simply had your shopkeeper, your vendor, your usual table at the one restaurant your family had gone to for years. He remembered your order before you said it, she knew your mother by name. The waiter never asked where you liked to sit, he just walked you there. Conversations ran long because nobody was in a hurry to leave. Somewhere between one decade and the next, the city got faster, more convenient, easier in every measurable way. And somewhere in that same stretch, it quietly stopped remembering people the way it used to.

Shopping strolls through Prince Market, Love Lane and Janpath in Hazratganj

Before shopping meant one building with everything inside it, it meant three different lanes in Hazratganj, each with its own personality. Prince Market, Love Lane, and Janpath weren’t destinations so much as habits, places you ended up without much planning. There was no food court, no central AC, just pavement and window displays and the occasional detour that turned a quick errand into an entire evening. Malls simplified things eventually, but they never quite replicated that particular kind of aimless wandering.

Local shopping complexes in Bhootnath, Munshi Puliya and Aliganj

Before “let’s go to the mall” was even a sentence people said, Saturday plans meant Bhootnath, Munshi Puliya, or Aliganj, depending on which side of town you were coming from. Nobody called these shopping complexes a “destination” they were just where things got bought, school shoes, birthday gifts, whatever your mother sent you out for and you took two extra hours to actually get. There was no map, no directory, no food court to regroup at. Just familiar shopkeepers who knew your order before you said it, and evenings that stretched longer than the errand ever needed.

Single-screen cinemas like Pratibha, Subhash, Odeon, Capitol and Umrao

There was a time when watching a film in Lucknow didn’t come with seat selection or surround sound guarantees, just Pratibha, Subhash, Odeon, Capitol, and Umrao, each with a reputation you knew before you ever bought a ticket. Someone always had strong opinions about which one had better seats and which one you avoided in summer. Nobody checked showtimes online. You just went, stood outside, and hoped the film hadn’t sold out already. It wasn’t convenient, it was just how movies used to feel like an occasion.

Bargaining sprees through the lanes of Aminabad and Chowk

There was an entire skill set that came with shopping in Aminabad and Chowk, and it had nothing to do with knowing what you wanted. It was knowing how to bargain, how to look unimpressed at a good price, how to walk two steps away and let the shopkeeper call you back. Nobody taught you this exactly, you just picked it up from watching an aunt or a mother do it a hundred times. Malls eventually did away with all of that. Turns out that was kind of the point.

Local bakeries and eateries for burgers, patties, cream rolls and other snacks

Every Lucknow household had a bakery loyalty long before loyalty programs existed, and it was almost always Burma, Sunder, JJ, or Modern, chosen without much discussion because the discussion had happened generations ago. Burgers, patties, cream rolls, nothing that needed a menu, nothing that needed explaining because you already knew exactly what you were getting before you walked in. Half the appeal was that it never changed, the other half was that it didn’t need to. Malls eventually brought choice, this just brought certainty.

Sabzi and fruit mandis instead of supermarket aisles

Before supermarkets organised everything into neat, labelled aisles, buying vegetables meant heading to the mandi, where nothing was neatly anything and that was fine. You didn’t grab and go, you walked through, checked, pressed a tomato or two, argued a little over the price of okra, and somehow knew which vendor to trust for onions versus who to avoid entirely. Nobody scanned a barcode. Someone just weighed it by hand and rounded down if they liked you, it took longer, nobody minded.

Favourite Chaat thelas in their locality

There was no need for reviews when you already knew, with complete certainty, which chaat thela near your house made the best pani ke batashe in the whole locality. Everyone had one, and everyone was equally convinced theirs was unbeatable, which somehow never got resolved and never needed to. The vendor knew your order, your spice level, and probably your name too. It wasn’t about variety, it was about loyalty to one guy on one corner, and honestly, that loyalty still hasn’t fully transferred to a food court.

Parks and picnic spots instead of gaming arcades

There was no console involved in a good Sunday, just Nehru Park if you were being lazy about it, or Kukrail if someone had convinced their parents to commit to the whole day. Aurobindo Park sat somewhere in between, depending on the group. Nobody was racking up points or unlocking levels. It was grass, packed food, and enough people around that the afternoon looked after itself. Screens eventually offered more control over how fun went, parks never really cared about control, and that was the appeal.

A monthly khata at the neighbourhood parchoon shop

Long before “buy now, pay later” became a checkout option, it was just the khata at the parchoon shop, a beat-up notebook where your family’s name showed up more often than anyone would like to admit. You’d grab sugar or biscuits or whatever your mother sent you for, say the shopkeeper should just note it down, and leave without a second thought. The whole month ran on that arrangement. Nobody needed a credit score, they just needed the shopkeeper to know your father would show up eventually and settle it.

Indira Gandhi Planetarium, Lucknow zoo and Regional Science City trips

There was a stretch of childhood where every field trip in Lucknow led to the same three places, planetarium, zoo, Regional Science City, enough times that you could probably still recite the sky show from memory. Nobody minded the repetition. The elephant was still the elephant, the planetarium roof still turned into a sky, and that was somehow enough to justify getting up early on a Saturday. Malls eventually offered more choice, they never quite offered that particular kind of low-effort wonder.

Family dinners at OG Restaurants like Durgma, Kool Break, Moti Mahal, Jone Hing

Family dinners had a fixed rotation long before anyone in Lucknow needed a food court to decide where to eat, Durgma, Kool Break, Moti Mahal, Jone Hing, each with its own regulars who’d defend it a little too passionately. Nobody needed a reservation or a review to pick one. You just went, usually for a birthday or no real reason at all, and ordered exactly what you always ordered. It wasn’t about discovering something new, it was about a place already knowing you, which a food court never quite manages.
