India has formally submitted its interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, proposing Ahmedabad as the host city. PT Usha, President of India’s Commonwealth Games Association, sent a letter of intent to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) on the 13th of March, reinforcing the city’s preparedness.
City emerging as a global sports hub
Ahmedabad has hosted major international events, including the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final and large-scale concerts. The city boasts the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket venue, and the expanding Sardar Patel Sports Complex, which is set to feature 10 new stadiums as part of India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics.
CGF president Chris Jenkins and CEO Katie Sadleir visited Gujarat in January to evaluate Ahmedabad’s potential. Their visit came after Singapore and Malaysia withdrew their bids due to financial concerns. Gujarat’s government has committed significant resources to sports infrastructure, allocating Rs 250 crore in the 2025–26 budget. Minister of State for Sports Harsh Sanghavi highlighted rapid development, with multiple district and taluka sports complexes under construction.
With strong government backing and a proven track record in hosting large events, Ahmedabad has emerged as a leading candidate for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. A final decision is expected in the coming months.
