IIT Kanpur takes a step forward in the field of research with its new National Centre of Geodesy

The NCG visions to nucleate & nourish education, and expand the scope of R&D ventures in the field of Geodesy.

Kanpur's premier technology institute, the IIT has taken a big step in the foray of research with the full swing operations of the National Centre of Geodesy here. While the department was initially launched in 2019, it was only recently equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and commissioned to perform to its true potential during the 2nd PMMC (Project Monitoring and Management Committee) assembly on September 16. With the advanced infrastructure in place now, the NCG visions to nucleate and nourish education, along with expanding the scope of R&D ventures in the field of Geodesy

As per reports, the coordination of the centre is undertaken by Professor Onkar Dikshit from the Department of Civil Engineering at the IIT. Under his supervision, the national centre aims to provide extensive support to aspirants and researchers working in Geodesy. Regular fellowship programmes and training sessions will also be conducted here to attract interested candidates.

The NCG has also rolled out a new specialization course, by the name DIIT, with the aim of producing well-trained professionals. Besides, a range of state-of-the-art facilities will be catered here to benefit the candidates and smoothen the research activities here, read reports. All subjects within the scope of geodetic techniques, to understand the Earth's rotation and determining the exact gravitational field with the use of satellites such as GRACE, GOCE, CHAMP, will be studied here.

Regional Centres for Geodesy (RCG)

The department extends support to the state and central government in matters related to Geodesy along with providing training, laboratory and resources to researchers from other institutes. To move ahead in future, the NCG has also proposed to open regional centres in institutions working in the field of Geodesy.

Renowned lecturers, researchers and faculties from various IITs also discussed the launch of diverse activity setups for NCG regional centres at the PMMC meeting. It is pegged that both these provisos will help to spread awareness, knowledge and promote development activities to streamline the NCG vision, holistically.
