Lucknow has seen a rapid change in its cityscape and its lifestyle. The change has been observed in terms of infrastructural developments, the basic lifestyle of people and the integration of more technology in everyday life. Today, the city is completely different than it was a few years ago, especially during the past 10 years. Between 2010 and 2020, Lucknow has changed leaps and bounds.


Here is looking back at the 29 major developments that Lucknow has seen in the past four years and everything we are thankful for.

Lucknow Metro

Lucknow Metro began its services on priority corridor from Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport to Charbagh Railway Station, in 2017. This etched Lucknow's name in record books, as the priority corridor was the fastest developed metro route in the country. Metro in Lucknow has become a successful means of transport, with a crrent ridership of over 65,000 people.

 International Cricket Stadium (formerly Ekana)

The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium was among the biggest developments to happen in Lucknow. The stadium was built with the idea of providing a world class cricket and other sports complex with ultra-modern facilities. The stadium saw an immensely successful match between India and West Indies on 6th November 2018, the first ever T20I to be held in Lucknow!

Lucknow Smart City

A nationwide Smart City Mission was launched in 2015, the same came to Lucknow during the last leap year. Within a few years Lucknow has completed several major projects which include the laying of LPG pipelines, introduction of a smart Integrated Traffic Management System and introduction of several smart bus shelters.

New Hospitals in Lucknow

In the last 4 years, Lucknow has also seen the opening of several new hospitals, these have been big names which were already established in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. The list includes 1000-bed multi speciality Medanta Hospital, an all new Super Speciality Cancer Institute and a 330-bed super speciality Apollo Hospital.

New Airport Terminal

Civil Aviation department of India in 2018 announced that Lucknow will have a new terminal with a capacity of handling 27 million passengers. Though the terminal is still under development and is expected to be operational by 2021, Lucknow Airport has been handling domestic and international flights since 2012 (the previous leap year).

New High Court

The humongous and highly impressive building of the Lucknow bench Allahabad High Court was completed in 2016. It is one of the more impressive modern day developments that have taken place in the city.

New Malls

Though the city had many shopping complexes and malls, between 2016 and 2020 several new ones were developed in Lucknow. These include the Crown Mall opposite BBD University, the very new Phoenix Pallasio mall near Shaaheed Path and the under construction Lulu Mall- the biggest mall chains in the world, that could possibly open gates for us folks in 2020.

Riverfront Developments

Another new development to happen in Lucknow was the remodelling and development of the Gomti Riverfront. This included cleaning up of Gomti which was often referred to as the biggest 'drain' in Lucknow. This development ensured a cleaner Gomti and a cleaner, more developed shore.

Shift in Lucknow's Nightlife

Lucknow's nightlife has seen a drastic change in the past few years. Within the past few years several new bars, cafes and food outlets were opened in Lucknow which completely changed the culture of the city. The nightlife which was majorly non-existent was infused with a new energy and life in the last few years, making Gomti Nagar the hub of all nocturnal fun!

Lucknow-Agra Expressway

The Lucknow-Agra e-way was inaugurated on 21st November 2016. This expressway was made with the idea to lighten the traffic on the already congested roads of the city and shorten the distance between Lucknow and Agra. This connects to the Yamuna e-way making the journey from lucknow to Delhi and Noida, a smoother and much less time consuming.

Charbagh Renovations

Another addition to the thriving city was the renovation of the iconic Charbagh Railway Station. Proposed in 2017 the project included a complete interior overhaul of the station building making it no less than an international airport and addition of various modern amenities. This was done while keeping the exterior intact in order to maintain the heritage quotient of the building.

Lucknow- Delhi Tejas Express

Lucknow Delhi Tejas Express was a major undertaking that brought huge relief to passengers travelling between the two cities. This new and ultra-modern train facility has been all about luxury and speed. The train has received great response from people in both of these cities and makes travelling much less irksome.

Cycle Tracks

Cycle tracks were yet another gift that Lucknow received during this leap year. The narrow tracks which have been made across the city allow pedestrians and bicycle riders to move in the city without any hindrance. These have been especially beneficial for kids who generally go to school of bikes.

Open Air Gyms

In the last leap year several open air gyms have been started in Lucknow. With an aim to promote a healthy lifestyle and ensure people get enough "outdoor air" and "sunshine" these gyms have been a hit among the people in Lucknow. The civic bodies have even undertaken the idea to develop gyms with great facilities in prominent parks of the city and we cannot be more thrilled about them!

Development of IT City

After 2017, an IT City was developed in lucknow with major investment from HCL. The development of IT City began in 2016 itself and today has made Lucknow an emerging hub of IT with HCL looking to enrich its workforce by 50%. This has created a number of job opportunities for the people of Lucknow.

Startup Ecosystem

In the last 4 years Lucknow has also emerged as a major start-up ecosystem. The Uttar Pradesh government's lucrative startup policy is abetting young minds to open their business in the city itself. These are not only generating better job opportunities for Lucknow but enabling people to grow small businesses from the ground up. Knocksense, Trendsetterz, Purplehide and Ziffy are among the famous startups from Lucknow.

Purvanchal Expressway

Another addition to the infrastructure and connectivity to Lucknow is the Purvanchal Expressway. This 6-lane expressway is currently under construction and will connect the historic towns of Ballia and Azamgarh with the state capital, Lucknow.

Kisan Path and Outer Ring Road Project

Part of the ambitious 108 kilometre 'outer ring road project' the kisan path is a 15 kilometre stretch which connects the Sultanpur to Faizabad Road in Lucknow. The entire outer ring road project is expected to decongest the roads of Lucknow which are already brimming with traffic.

Heritage Arc Development

The development of the heritage arc- Agra, Lucknow, Varanasi has been big for Lucknow. It brought major development to the area near Clock Tower and Bada Imambara, a project which completely changed the face of Lucknow. It included renovation of the Imambara and Rumi Darwaza as well as major maintenance and beautification of the area near the Clock Tower.

Smart Bus Stands

A huge part of the Lucknow Smart City initiative, smart bus stands have made quite an impression on the residents of the city. Equipped with modern facilities such as bio toilets and sheltered waiting area, these have put a smile on the faces of daily commuters.

First ever Defence Expo in Lucknow

This was also the year when the first ever Defence Expo took place in Lucknow. Lucknow saw a never-before-seen showcasing of armour, military equipments and a full fledged airshow complete with some of the most amazing aircrafts in the world.

First ever Investors Summit in Lucknow

Lucknow also played host to the first ever UP investors summit which brought in millions of dollars worth of investment to UP. Organised in 2018 and then again in 2019, the summit brought in deals for over 4.3 lakh crores to UP!

100 years of Lucknow University

2020 was also the year when Lucknow University completed its 100 years. The iconic campus of Lucknow which has taught and hone millions of students over the years, opened its gates to a huge celebration and is expected to carry them for the entire year.

Butterfly Park in Lucknow Zoo

In order to attract more visitors and make the zoo more interesting, a butterfly park was opened in the Lucknow Zoo. This not only added to the overall charm of the zoo but made it a hotspot for kids and people who enjoy nature in all its splendour.

An invaluable lot will be up for trade in London and these invaluable pieces have made it to the Sotheby auction lot.

The Sotheby's Auction in London has indexed a long list of over 350 objects from the late Patricia Edwina Victoria Mountbatten which will be exhibited as the lot. These items from the eldest daughter of Britain's last Viceroy of India would go under the hammer on March 24, where a priceless pair of Made in Jaipur gold and enamel elephants will also be up for trade on March 24. Facts suggest that these were given by Louis Mountbatten to his wife, as a present to mark their 24th wedding anniversary in 1946. The pair had become engaged at Viceroy's House in Delhi in 1922.

Lucknow witnesses the historic unveiling of the world's largest Khadi mask on U.P. Diwas

A mask measuring 150 sq. meters was unveiled which trumped the old world record of 72.29 sq. meters.

Lucknow witnessed a string of celebrations to mark the state's foundation day, U.P. Diwas on Sunday. Among the major highlights were the launch of the world's largest mask crafted from Khadi and an innovative Khadi fashion show. The Chief Minister launched a 150 sq. metre mask developed by designer Manish Tripathi in collaboration with the Odra Foundation and Uttar Pradesh Khadi and Village Industries Board, Government of Uttar Pradesh.

The making of the world's largest Khadi mask

Motivated by the government's initiatives for a self-reliant India like 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' & 'Vocal for Local', Manish envisioned a mask that could make it to the Guinness Book of world records. For his endeavour, he sought help from the Khadi and Village Industries Board. He was offered 2 metre of the Khadi fabric from each of UP's 75 districts by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Board. In addition to this, his project was also aided by Indian Institute of Crafts and Design, Jaipur.

The designer traveled to 10 states across the country for collecting fabric for the mask including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Haryana and Rajasthan. The accumulated cloth was stitched together into a mask measuring 150 sq. meters which trumped the old world record of 72.29 sq. meters. It is proposed that the raw material of the mask would be reused for producing alternative products by the self-help groups which would be later introduced in the market.

Khadi Fashion Show organised in Lucknow at the Avadh Shilpgram

On the occasion of U.P. Diwas, Avadh Shilp gram in Lucknow witnessed an uncoventional fashion show inspired by the indigenous fabric. In a spectacle to behold, fashion models from Delhi and Mumbai sported the Khadi costumes designed by notable designers like Ritu Beri, Manish Tripathi, Rina Dhaka, Asma Hussain, Runa Banerjee. The fashion show event was graced by the Minister of Khadi & Gram Udyog.

Republic day 2021 marks a moment of immense pride and joy for Lucknow. Khushi Srivastava, from Lucknow marched in the prestigious Republic day parade at Delhi's Rajpath. She is the only girl from the city to have found a place in the 200-member contingent which is constituted of cadets from different regions of the country. Khushi, an alumnus of City Montessori School is a final year student of BSc at Lucknow's Isabella Thoburn College.

Aspirations to serve in the Indian Armed forces one day

Reportedly, the young girl is an Under officer in the senior NCC wing of the 19 UP Girls Battalion and she cracked the four-stage selection process after meticulous training and rigorous practice. A resident of Thakurganj, Khushi aspires to serve in the Indian armed forces one day.

Khushi further stated that though NCC is considered a tough choice for girls, the strenuous nature of activities makes them more interesting for her. After gaining exposure at the Thal Sainik Camp last year, she decided to apply for the esteemed Republic day parade. Crediting all her success to her parents, she expressed gratitude for their consistent support.

The contingent officer of U.P. girls' battalion informed that the group from Uttar Pradesh included three from Agra, two from Bareilly and one each from Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Aligarh & Prayagraj. Uttar Pradesh's participation in the Republic day parade was also marked by the four boys selected from the state; 3 from Agra and 1 from Gorakhpur.

Indigenous products shine the brightest at Lucknow's Hunar Haat

The recently inaugurated Hunar Haat in Lucknow has managed to grab a lot of attention from the city folks, owing to the amazing artwork that's been put on display here. The most loved products at the fair, are the natively crafted items that have been designed by Indian artisans and craftsmen. In two days of the launch, the art-fair has become one of the busiest hubs in the city, flocked by visitors who are enjoying the interesting range of creative artworks.

As per reports, the second day of the event saw a tremendous increase in footfall. Reportedly, these items are attracting greater audiences to the fair that is in town till the 4th of February.

The artworks produced under ODOP have made their maiden entry to this event organized by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs. Additionally, the Hunar Haat in Lucknow is also showcasing handwoven textile works like Mangalgiri sarees, kalamkari, leather products, lac bangles and others.

UP mandates liquor license for domestic storage over the prescribed limit

With the introduction of the revised excise policy, booze consumers need to be extra alert and careful about their liquor stocks at home. The Uttar Pradesh government has mandated the presence of a license for keeping liquor stocks above the prescribed limit within the household. As per the rules entailed in the policy, citizens would be required to have a license for purchasing, transporting and stocking liquor in excess of the authorized retail limit.

A limit of six litres per person or a single household

According to the latest guidelines, only six litres of alcohol would be allowed per person or in a house without a license. If an individual wants to consume more than this, he would have to obtain a license from the Excise Department at an annual fee of ₹ 12,000. In addition to this, ₹ 51,000 would have to be deposited as security money under the specified conditions.

"The state government has set a revenue target of Rs 6,000 crore more than Rs 34,500 crore in the year 2021-22, against Rs 28,300 crore in the year 2020-21 of the Excise Department. As a result, 7.5 percent increase in annual license fees for country liquor, foreign liquor retail shops, and model shops for the year 2021-22." stated the Additional Chief Secretary of the Excise Department. He further informed that there has been no increase in the retail shop license fees of beer through the revised policy.

The ADC also mentioned that the new policy encapsulates provisions that would encourage liquor production in the state. As per one of its clauses, the liquor produced in the state from the state-grown fruits will be exempted from consideration duty for the next five years.
