The entire nation held its breath and people from all ages and walks of life were glued to their TVs and media devices. The date was August 23, 2023 and the ‘Vikram’ lander of ISRO’s Chandrayaan 3 mission was about to attempt a soft landing on Moon’s South Pole.
Much to the joy of millions upon millions of people, the soft landing was successful and India became the first country in the world to land a probing spacecraft on the South Pole of the Moon.
To celebrate ISRO’s historic success, the Central Government termed August 23 as National Space Day, to be celebrated every year.
National Space Day 2024: A reminder of India’s immense space potential
The country is celebrating its first National Space Day today, i.e., August 23, 2024. Apart from being a yearly celebration of the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission, this day has also been envisioned as a reminder of India’s capability to continue excelling in space exploration.
Furthermore, the day is an attempt to encourage the country’s youth to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. With more and more young minds pursuing these streams, the country will be able to add new chapters to its story of space missions.
