With the ever expanding population in Lucknow, it is undeniable that the city and its residents produce an unnatural amount of waste. Often times, the waste is not properly managed, not treated in the right manner and is generally dumped into the Gomti River. Finally, the civic bodies are looking to make use of the garbage by converting it into usable energy and they have also stated that by next month, 100 houses in Lucknow will run on electricity produced from waste.

What’s the update?
According to officials, the power plant to make such an idea into a reality already exists. The infrastructure required for the project- mainly turbine generators, is also available at the LMC’s Shivri Waste Management Plant. Owing to this, getting the plan to become fully functional may become a relatively easy task.
How much waste will be converted into usable energy?
The LMC’s Shivri Waste Management Plant is one that has the capacity to convert 45,000 metric tonnes of waste into 450 MW (megawatts) of usable electric energy every month. Of the total 45,000 metric tonnes, 1,500 metric tonnes is generated daily by Lucknowites, meaning that there won’t be any shortage of this source of energy.
Apart from that, the plant has five turbine generators- which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. These have been procured from a private company and installed at here in Lucknow.

Garbage collected from the city will be brought to the plant and dumped in a large pit from where it will be transferred to the combustion chamber. After that, the waste will be heated at extremely high temperatures to release the usable form of energy.
What issues will be faced?
Though it is great that the waste produced in the city will be put to good use, one major issue is the collection of garbage. The LMC could start with garbage on the roads, streets and public places, but then residents would have no place to properly dump thier daily waste. They have said that they will partner with a few private players to help in waste collection from all parts of the city.
