Uttar Pradesh’s WhatsApp-based transport chatbot, launched in May 2025, is set to expand its services to 20 Indian states. The AI-enabled tool allows users to access transport-related services instantly via WhatsApp. The chatbot is active 24×7 and integrated with the Central Vahan and Sarthi databases, ensuring real-time, verified data. It supports multiple languages, catering to India’s diverse linguistic population.
One number, multiple services
By saving the number 8005441222 and sending a “Hi” message on WhatsApp, users can access a range of services, including:
-
Driving licence information
-
Vehicle registration details
-
Challan status
-
Road tax payments
-
Ownership transfers
-
Application tracking
Officials highlighted that the chatbot has reduced delays and improved access to services previously tied to long queues and paperwork at RTO offices.
MVIs in UP lack inspection powers
While Regional Inspectors (RI) in UP have been re-designated as Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs), they still do not have the authority to carry out vehicle inspections. Without inspection powers, technical issues in vehicles go unnoticed. Further, out of 120 sanctioned MVI posts in UP, only 75 are filled, which is inadequate. In contrast, Maharashtra has over 1,000 MVIs.
