One of the last remaining iron screw-pile bridges of Indian Railways, Bridge Number 20 over Mithi River, between Bandra and Mahim, is set to be be dismantled — marking the end of an era. Originally constructed in 1888 as part of Bandra Railway Station’s development, this historic bridge has been a key component of the rail network for 135 years, supporting the tracks on both the Slow and Fast lines, linking Churchgate and Virar.
The replacement work is set to begin with two major overnight rail blocks scheduled on January 24-25 and January 25-26 — each spanning 9.5 hours.
Big changes ahead, but be ready for delays
This historic bridge features eight cast-iron pillars, each weighing between 8 to 10 tonnes and extending 15 to 20 meters into the riverbed. Over the years, despite efforts to reinforce its structure, the bridge has weakened, posing safety concerns. Western Railway engineers have decided to replace the aging iron piers with more durable cement concrete girders, to ensure the safety and reliability of train services.
To carry out this monumental task, two major rail blocks have been scheduled for January 24-25 and 25-26, lasting 9.5 hours each night. These blocks will disrupt local train services between Dadar and Andheri, with temporary speed restrictions imposed, once the work is completed.
While the replacement promises enhanced safety and durability, disruptions are expected until May, with further rail blocks for pillar construction and track realignment. Passengers are advised to anticipate delays and check schedules during this period.
