Mumbai’s much-awaited Versova–Bandra Sea Link (VBSL) has crossed the 25% completion mark, with authorities aiming for a July 2027 launch. The ₹18,120 crore project is designed to ease traffic along the city’s overloaded western corridor and finally appears to be gaining momentum after early delays.
Complex marine construction underway
According to Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) officials, foundation and pier work are already well underway. The marine segment, stretching across the Arabian Sea, remains the most technically challenging phase but is progressing under strict safety measures. To fast-track the project, MSRDC has divided construction packages across multiple contractors.
Once completed, VBSL will extend the existing Bandra–Worli Sea Link by 17.17 km, offering commuters a direct coastal route and significantly reducing pressure on internal roads such as the Western Express Highway and SV Road.
As per reports, marine work will pause during the monsoon season due to safety concerns, but construction on land-based connectors will proceed throughout the rainy season to keep the overall schedule intact.
Soaring costs, long-term gains
Originally budgeted at ₹11,332 crore in 2018, project costs have since surged to ₹18,120 crore, driven by factors such as relocation of casting yards, design upgrades, lighting installations, and inflation. Despite the escalation, officials remain confident that the long-term social and economic returns will outweigh the costs.
Once operational, the VBSL is expected to cut travel time between Bandra and Versova from 45–60 minutes to under 15 minutes, even during peak hours. If the schedule holds, July 2027 will mark a new chapter in Mumbai’s urban evolution, one where connectivity meet at scale.
