On Friday, Mumbai recorded its hottest January day in eight years with temperatures soaring to 36°C, per Santacruz weather station reports. This temperature spike, 5.2°C above the usual January average, left the city basking in unseasonal heat. The minimum temperature, however, remained close to the seasonal average, dropping to 16.7°C.
This unexpected warmth is attributed to the influx of easterly winds during the day. Earlier in 2016, Mumbai recorded such high temperatures, when it peaked at 37.3°C. In 2017, it hit 36°C on January 24. Interestingly, the city’s warmest January day ever was recorded in 2006, at a scorching 37.4°C.
Despite the intense heat, relief is on the way. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures are expected to be moderate over the weekend, with maximum temperatures predicted to range between 30°C and 31°C. The minimum temperature will likely hover between 19°C and 20°C. After two days of intense warmth, Mumbaikars can expect a welcome dip in the mercury!
