The new Bombay High Court building is set to be constructed on 30 acres of land in the Bandra Government Colony. This site includes 2.5 acres formerly occupied by the Gautam Nagar slum dwellers, which had posed a significant challenge for the project.
The eviction process is expected to be completed by 10 April, after which demolition will begin, paving the way for the construction of the new High Court building in Bandra.
Successful resolution and new housing allocations
Initially, plans had been made to rehabilitate the 138 eligible slum dwellers from Gautam Nagar in Malvani, outside Bandra. However, 100 of these residents rejected the offered houses and demanded relocation within Bandra itself. The matter has now been resolved, clearing the way for construction.
The Slum Rehabilitation Authority agreed to rehouse 100 of the eligible slum dwellers within Bandra. A lottery was conducted, resulting in 95 residents being allocated houses in the Om Sai SRA building in Kherwadi, with an additional five non-resident allocations under the Balaji Shopkeepers Association Jhopu Yojana scheme. The houses measure 300 square feet in the Om Sai project and 269 square feet in the Balaji project.
