Mumbai’s ambitious Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has reached a major milestone, successfully completing over 50,000 door-to-door surveys—a record in the history of the Mumbai Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). Spearheaded by Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL) under the Adani Group, the project plans to rehabilitate approximately 1.5 lakh tenements, nearly three times the number recorded in a 2007-08 survey.
This large-scale transformation aims to turn Asia’s biggest slum into a modern, well-planned urban hub with improved housing, infrastructure, and amenities.
85,000 tenements numbered, survey ongoing
Officials revealed that numbering has been completed for 85,000 tenements, with surveys ongoing to identify eligible residents for rehabilitation. The project promises better housing, infrastructure, and economic opportunities while preserving the dignity of Dharavi’s residents. Unlike previous slum rehabilitation efforts, residents will be relocated to well-planned townships with modern amenities, including schools, healthcare facilities, and green spaces, both within Dharavi and in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
However, the project has faced challenges, including protests and logistical hurdles. Survey teams, often accompanied by police protection, have been working tirelessly to ensure no one is left out. DRP CEO SVR Srinivas urged residents to cooperate, emphasising the need to avoid delays.
With the redevelopment finally taking off after decades of failed attempts, officials have urged Dharavi residents to participate in the survey, ensuring a smoother transition to better housing and improved living standards.
