Mumbai is set to sizzle once again as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heatwave warning for March 9 and 10, marking the second such alert in two weeks. The coastal city, along with neighbouring Thane and Raigad districts, is expected to witness temperatures soaring above 38°C, with interior areas like Navi Mumbai, Thane likely to hit a blistering 39°C–41°C.
Mumbai’s temperatures climb past seasonal averages
Mumbai is already grappling with soaring temperatures, as Colaba observatory recorded 35.3°C on Thursday—over five degrees above normal—after hitting 37.4°C on Wednesday. Today, temperatures are expected to fluctuate between a mild 19°C in the morning and a sweltering 37°C by afternoon. IMD meteorologists link the heat spike to strong easterly winds, while experts forecast peak temperatures between March 7 and 11.
Meteorologists attribute these conditions to an anticyclone system forming in the region. The situation mirrors late February’s heatwave, when Mumbai recorded an eight-year high of 38.7 degrees.
Weather experts warn that this could be one of the hottest spells of 2025, with coastal temperatures reaching 37-39°C and inland areas like Thane and Navi Mumbai potentially soaring to 41°C. While March is a transitional month with typical temperature swings, the intensity of this heatwave has raised concerns.
