Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and an NGO, Access to Hope, have joined hands in a bid to transform Five Gardens in Dadar, into an accessible zone for differently-abled citizens, senior citizens and children. This initiative is part of the Union Ministry’s Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan (Accessible India Campaign).

Five Gardens is divided into five green patches, labelled Garden A, B, C, D and E, with central walkways connecting them.

Key highlights of the Five Gardens project

  • The project is divided into three phases:

    • Phase 1: Accessible footpaths and public toilets.

    • Phase 2 & 3: Improvements to garden area and surrounding footpaths.

  • Inclusive Design: The project aims to maintain the heritage value of the gardens while enhancing accessibility for all, especially vulnerable groups.

  • Improved Walkability: Uneven basalt stone pathways will be levelled to make walking easier for everyone, particularly for those with mobility challenges.

  • Inclusive Play Areas: Swings and merry-go-rounds will be installed for children with disabilities, ensuring they can enjoy the space.

  • Tactile Flooring: To aid visually impaired visitors, tactile flooring will be introduced, improving accessibility within the gardens.

  • Completion by 2025: The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

This project will serve as a model, with plans to expand similar accessibility improvements in other Mumbai gardens.
