Mumbai’s iconic Sea Rock Hotel is making a grand comeback as Taj Bandstand, with construction set to begin in late 2025. The Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) announced the revival of this historic property, located on a sea-facing plot in Bandra, opposite its sister hotel, Taj Lands End.
A historic rebirth of Mumbai’s first five-star hotel
Puneet Chhatwal, IHCL’s Managing Director and CEO, revealed that the project awaits final clearances from the BMC and Airport Authority of India before breaking ground. This rebranded luxury hotel will join IHCL’s prestigious Mumbai portfolio, including the Taj Mahal Palace, Taj Lands End, Taj Santacruz, and Taj The Trees.
The original Sea Rock Hotel, built in 1978, made history as suburban Mumbai’s first five-star establishment and was a celebrity hotspot until it was damaged in the 1993 terror attacks. After changing hands multiple times and facing legal hurdles, IHCL became the property’s full owner in 2020, paving the way for its rebirth.
Now under full IHCL ownership, Taj Bandstand promises to re-establish this historic site as a symbol of Mumbai’s luxury and charm, contributing to the city’s thriving hospitality sector of 75 branded hotels and over 15,500 rooms.
