Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), in the Borivali area of Mumbai could possibly become a new home to an endangered species of mountain gorillas. Reportedly, the gorillas would be acquired from Bwindi in Uganda under an animal exchange program.
In exchange for mountain gorillas, the state will be required to send tigers to Uganda, for which the talks are underway.
The proposal for the exchange has been forwarded to the state government
Bwindi in Uganda is home to more than half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas. Over 300 gorillas reside in Bwindi’s natural habitat, which has also been named as one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.
Mumbai’s Forest Minister has already requested the state government in this regard. The proposal for the animal exchange with Uganda is being taken forward by the ministers and officers. Furthermore, the plan will be executed further after receiving a nod from the administrative bodies.
Moreover, SGNP also acquired a pair of young Asiatic lions, this Friday, from the Sakkarbaug Zoological Park (SZP) of Junagadh in Gujarat. The pair, consisting of a male and a female, aged three is currently under quarantine and will be released in the park on December 5.
