Micro-blogging site Twitter is all set to educate people in India about their right to vote through quizzes, emojis and reminders. Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in various states across the country, on Thursday Twitter announced new initiatives to empower citizens. With this move, the social networking platform aims to help people make informed decisions as they exercise their constitutional rights.
Harnessing the power of Open Internet!
Notably, the general election in Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand is scheduled this year. Talking about this decision Payal Kamat, the Public Policy and Government executive of Twitter India said, "Twitter is what's happening, and events of political and civic significance always find a place among the conversations on the service".
"In line with that, we have been working in partnership with official authorities, including the Election Commission of India to empower every #JagrukVoter on Twitter, and we will continue to harness the power of the Open Internet to strengthen civic dialogue and encourage quality participation this election season," added the Twitter India executive.
Powered by the Election Commission of India
The micro-blogging site has partnered with official agencies including the Election Commission of India to offer authentic information to users. In partnership with the ECI, the bird app has also decided to expand its dedicated search prompt to provide real-time election updates via credible sources. These prompts will direct people to resources with information about candidate lists, voting dates, polling booths and other election-related FAQs.
Under the ambit of these initiatives, the social networking platform will launch a customised emoji which will be backup up with a notification and a reminder to cast vote as and when polling begins. Apart from this, Twitter will engage citizens in voter education quiz equipping them with important facts about the elections.
