The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) is going to implement multiple safety measures in their buses in 2022 to ensure safe travel for women commuters. As per reports, this undertaking with witness a surveillance upgrade, with CCTV cameras installations in all buses. Panic SOS buttons will also be placed in all vehicles, the transport agency informed on Thursday.
CCTV cameras to be installed in all buses
All buses of the BEST fleet, including the agency-owned vehicles and those newly procured under the wet-lease- will be fitted with two CCTV cameras each. This measure will be applied to Non-AC CNG buses, as well as AC electric buses, read reports.
The two cameras will be attached at the front door and the rear door respectively, to ensure complete monitoring of the entire bus throughout the journey. This surveillance will deter any potential miscreants from engaging in criminal activity.
SOS button to be available in case of emergencies
As an additional safety measure, all of BEST's red buses will mandatorily be fitted with an SOS button. Women commuters will be able to press this button in cases of any emergency or threat. A press of this button will alert the police and control room among others. These measures will provide a sense of security and confidence to female passengers.
