Following the confirmation of two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka, Ahmedabad in Gujarat has reported the first suspected case of the virus in a two-month-old baby at a private hospital in Chandkheda, reported Gujarat Samachar. Dr. Nirav Patel of Chandkheda’s Orange Hospital clarified that the baby’s condition is stable, and there is no immediate cause for major concern.
The virus, which has gained attention for its recent surge globally, was first identified in 2001 and can lead to respiratory issues, particularly in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Earlier this week, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed two HMPV cases in Karnataka, with a three-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy testing positive. The Gujarat government has issued an advisory on the 5th of January, urging the public to follow preventive measures, including wearing masks, frequent handwashing, and boosting immunity. Experts have also cautioned against the misuse of antiviral drugs, as there is no vaccine for HMPV.
