To tackle rising temperatures in cities, the Uttar Pradesh Government has allocated ₹70 crore under its new Upvan Scheme to create mini forests across urban areas. The initiative targets 17 municipal corporations, each receiving up to ₹3 crore to develop green zones spanning 2,000 sq. meters.

The move follows alarming findings by the UP State Disaster Management Authority (UPSDMA), which warned of worsening urban heat island effects in cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, and Prayagraj due to rapid urbanisation. A July 2024 report urged immediate measures, including green spaces and sustainable planning, to mitigate extreme heat.

The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect happens when cities become warmer than nearby rural areas, especially during summer and at night. This temperature difference is mainly due to human activities and city design, which change the natural environment.
