Lucknow woke up to a thick layer of smog on Tuesday morning. The Charbagh railway station’s skyline and Alambagh was covered in white smog which indicates city’s increasing pollution level in the city’s heart. The delusional cozy winter morning was just a farce show and the only real thing was the pollution struck smog which is ringing at an alarming rate right now.

According to a report in June 2017, the residential areas registered a rise in PM2.5 with a concentration lying in the range of 93.4 to 124.1 microgram/cubic meter. These areas include Aliganj, Vikas Nagar, Indira Nagar and Gomti Nagar.

The current reports indicate hazardous conditions. The maximum 24-hour mean concentration in Lalbagh has been recorded as PM 2.5 – 152 microgram/cubic meter with an average of 127 microgram/cubic meter in Lalbagh west. The data recorded is above the prescribed National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) of 60 microgram/cubic meter for industrial, residential, rural and other areas.

The PM2.5 is a particulate matter of diameter which is about 3% the diameter of a human hair. The particles that are listed in this category are very small and can only be detected with an electron microscope. The most polluted area in Lucknow is Talkatora followed by Lalbagh. It’s high time that we start taking this seriously and save ourselves from the dark future that awaits us.
