Chudamani to The Chorao Island!
Also known as Choddnnem, which means ‘jewelled headwear’ in Goan language, the spot was rechristened to Chorão by the Portuguese! They called it ‘Ilha dos Fidalgos’ translating to the ‘Island of Noblemen’ and the inhabitants of this island are now known as Chodankars, since the island was once known as Chudamani too.

Chorao Island is attractive primarily because of its splendid flora and fauna and it also houses the sprawling Salim Ali bird sanctuary. This locale is packed with dense mangrove swamps and the best way to navigate here, is by a canoe. There are over 400 species of migratory and local birds here so it is safe to say that it is surely a photographers paradise.
The Chorao village is home to some exquisite Portuguese villas and there is also a village Church, ancient temples and more!

To reach the Chorao Island, take a ferry from Ribandar, which is around 6 km from Panaji. But if you’re on the western side of the island, there is another a ferry linking Chorao to Pomburpa.
So if you’re looking to start your new year with a heavy dose of tranquillity and serenity, pack your bags and head for the Chorao Islands. Since it is situated only 5 km away from Panjim, you can easily squeeze in a half-day trip or if you wanna go-all-in, take all the time to explore this beauty.
