Also hailed as ‘Cab de Ram’ beach by the locals, legends note that the fort derives its name from Ram pertaining to Ramayana because here’s where Ram and Sita had found shelter during their 14 years in exile. Going by this fact, the fort is considered to be thousands of years old, making it one of the oldest forts in western India.
Established by the local Soonda rulers who ruled from this very spot, it was later overtaken by the Portuguese invaders after their arrival in Goa by defeating the local kings in 1763. The fort was then further refurbished by the foreigners given that it is a hub verdant scenic views overlooking the azure Arabian coastline. Inside the fort you’ll find a gatehouse, moats, ramparts, bastions, 21 cannon guns, springs, a watch tower and a water tank- each with its own piece of history and silent yet often visible stories.
Knock Knock
Although the fort is now in ruins, you can still visit this place for its unmatched sunset ambience and of course, the beach here is quite popular with the tourists in search of shaanti. There’s also the St. Antonio Church around, where the local community conducts annual feasts and a vacant jail lies just behind this chapel, which is used for government purposes.
