Ahmedabad witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall between midnight and 4 am on Sunday, leaving several areas waterlogged and forcing the temporary closure of multiple underpasses. While civic officials said roads were cleared quickly after the rain eased, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has now issued a Yellow alert, warning of another spell of intense rainfall across parts of the city.
Ognaj Receives Highest Rainfall
According to AMC data, Ahmedabad recorded 39 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 6 am on Sunday. Ognaj received the highest rainfall at 105mm, followed by Gota (72 mm), Ranip (66 mm), Sarkhej (60.5 mm) and Memnagar (58.5 mm).
Water-logging & underpass closures
Heavy rain led to temporary waterlogging in several parts of the city. As a precaution, the underpasses at Akhbarnagar, Mithakhali, Makarba and Kali Gam were closed to traffic from one to five hours overnight. AMC officials said they received four complaints related to waterlogging and other monsoon issues.
Further, the newly laid stormwater drainage line in Bodakdev, along with upgrades to the existing drainage network, helped clear roads within an hour after the rainfall stopped. Officials also said repairs to a sunken road and a damaged water pipeline have improved drainage in a low-lying stretch that frequently experiences water accumulation during heavy rain.
Emergency teams deployed
To minimise flooding, the civic body has deployed emergency response teams to vulnerable locations. Dewatering pumps and engineering staff have been stationed in high-risk areas, while officials are monitoring rainfall in real time from the municipal control room in Paldi using live weather data and CCTV surveillance.
Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain, while motorists have been urged to exercise extra caution in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
Weather Forecast
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ahmedabad is expected to experience a generally cloudy sky on Monday with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The maximum temperature was 35.4°C, while the minimum settled at 23.6°C, nearly 2.9°C below normal.
IMD has also indicated that rainfall intensity across Gujarat is likely to ease towards the weekend, with the possibility of heavy rain reducing significantly. The southwest monsoon is expected to advance further eastwards from Jamnagar into other parts of the state.
