Ahmedabad's Jhulta Minar: Baffling tourists and architects since 1452

The monument which is one of the many reasons why tourists from across the globe visit Ahmedabad.

India's ancient architecture has produced a slew of marvels that have left tourists from across the world awe-struck and amazed. Situated near Sarangpur on Kalupur road, Ahmedabad's Jhulta Minar or Shaking Minarets is one such monument that still has an aura of mystery around it while being over 500 years old. If you're looking for an astounding old age marvel, this is one that should be on your radar.

Why are they called 'shaking minarets'?

Dating back to the 15th century, the shaking minarets were once part of the larger Sidi Bashir mosque. After the battle between the Marathas and Khans of Gujarat in 1753 and due to the damage caused by the fighting, only two minarets adjoined by a central gateway are left today. These two minarets are known as 'Jhulta Minar' or Shaking Minarets.

Now, the reason why this place gets its name is a mystery yet unresolved. When you shake the upper arch of one of the minarets, the other minaret begins vibrating after a few seconds while faint tremors are also felt throughout the corridor connecting the two. Engineers, architects and tourists from across the globe have visited this site but have failed to ascertain the reason behind this shaky phenomenon.

The minarets also boast delicate stonework

Standing at around 70 feet tall, these minarets have balconies carved on the sides on each of the levels. Furthermore, the stonework on these minarets is also immensely beautiful, showcasing the depths of artistry in the architecture of this marvel from the past.

Another peculiar thing about these minarets is that you can give them both a shake by shaking one of them but if a train passes by (they're quite close to a railway station), they don't register even the slightest of vibrations. That's why people believe these minarets are earthquake-resistant, being constructed using itacolumite.
