India is poised to achieve a significant milestone in infrastructure with the construction of its first undersea rail tunnel, a key feature of the High-Speed Rail Corridor connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad. As per a recent inspection reports, the project adheres to stringent safety standards.
Spanning 7 kilometres beneath Thane Creek, the new rail tunnel will accommodate two parallel tracks within a single tube, which can operate trains at a speed of 250 km/h. This is a part of a larger 21-kilometre-long undersea tunnel which will link Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station in Mumbai to Shilphata. Additionally, per reports, the BKC station will feature 10 underground floors and 7 above-ground levels.

In terms of progress, the completion of the 394-metre-long ADIT (Access and Diversion) tunnel has facilitated further excavation activities. The ADIT tunnel is crucial for construction access and emergency evacuation. Additionally, the project involves the construction of several bridges over rivers along the route, further enhancing its connectivity.
Once completed, the bullet train project will cut travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to 2.5 hours, from the current 7-hour period. It is expected to boost the economy of the cities it connects, transforming travel between them and providing a more efficient means of transport across the region.
