The hyperloop system uses specially designed pods that travel through near-vacuum tubes, drastically reducing air resistance and enabling speeds of over 1,000 km/h. Once fully operational, this technology could provide a faster, more efficient alternative to traditional rail and air travel, transforming daily commutes and business trips between the two cities.
The Union Railway Minister recently announced an additional $1 million grant to IIT Madras for further development of the project. The 422-metre-long Avishkar Hyperloop test track, the largest student-led facility of its kind in the world is a major milestone in turning this vision into reality.
Indian Railways, along with private partners like Larsen & Toubro and ArcelorMittal, is actively supporting the initiative. The government is also exploring commercial implementation, with initial test routes of 40-50 km for freight transportation before expanding to passenger travel.
