Uncover the past with vibrant cultures of Pernem

Goa has a rich history, a past that is as fascinating as it is colourful. The winding lanes Pernem tell the stories of Goa's unique history as the northernmost town and the ‘Gateway to Goa’ from Maharashtra.

The tour, hence becomes a field day and an exciting extravaganza for a history buff!

The walk will begin at the 'Igreja de Sao Jose' chapel that was constructed in 1852. The walk will then proceed towards the Bhagwati Temple, an important cultural centre in town. It will then take you through a narrow market lane, where fresh local produce is brought from the nearby villages. Finally, the walk will conclude at another famous landmark, the Viscount of Pernem High School.

About Pernem

Pernem was under the rule of the Bhonsales of Sawantwadi until it was ceded to the Portuguese. Pernem offers visitors a glimpse of history and a chance to explore the coexistence of various religions. The culture of Pernem is quite different than that of the rest of Goa hence, festivals here are celebrated in a different manner as compared to the rest of the state.
