In a bid to alleviate the employment crisis in the country, India signed a pact with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). With the materialisation of a Statement of Intent, India will take help from the global organisation to fix unemployment problems and implement interventions that can scale up skills amongst youths and adolescents in the country. Under this project, attention will be converged over youth with special needs, migrant workers, victims of child labour, violence, child marriage and trafficking.
A step towards ample availability and assured accessibility of options
The recent association was apprised by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment (Independent Charge) after the SOI was agreed upon. He said, “We are committed to improving employment outcomes for all youth in India, including females and vulnerable ones too, through an enduring, long-term commitment for better opportunities.” Therein, it is important that there is ample availability and assured accessibility of options.

YuWaah to lead the employment initiative in India
Known across the world as Generation Unlimited, UNICEF’s multi-partner union in India is leading this initiative. Incepted in 2019, YuWaah attempts to transform educated individuals into productive workers who can be of benefit to the economy. Through its varied schemes, the organisation attempts to propel 100 million lives towards socio-economic growth and provide job-related skills to 200 million individual. Besides, YuWaah would associate with 300 million young people encouraging them to take up leadership and change-making roles.
API connect to join opportunities with job aspirations
Ensuring sufficient skills for the youth of the day, MoLE, UNICEF and YuWaah will try to bridge the gap between learned youth and economic opportunities. In order to gauge the relevance of the projects, regular feedback will be taken from YuWaah’s virtual engagement platform, U-Report.
Labour Ministry Secretary Apurva Chandra, said, “To effectively harness capabilities of our youth, interventions must reflect labour market demand and the needs of employers, as a well as the aptitude and aspirations of youth.” Further, MoLE will work on linking opportunities with job aspirations through API connect.
