A closer look at 7 new development projects in Lucknow driving the city’s expansion

Transforming connectivity, lifestyle and public spaces

Lucknow is entering a decisive phase of urban growth, with major infrastructure and development projects redefining how the city expands. From expressways and rapid rail corridors to riverfront upgrades, hospitality additions and IT-led townships, these 7 new development projects in Lucknow reflect a city investing in stronger public spaces and long-term economic momentum. Together, they signal a clear shift towards a more future-ready Lucknow.

1. Lucknow Airport Expansion

Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport is set for a major expansion, with Adani Airports investing close to ₹10,000 crore. A brand-new terminal will double annual passenger handling from 8 million to 14 million by 2026–27. Airside upgrades include a parallel taxi track to increase aircraft movement to 24 flights per hour.

The headline move is the runway extension from 2,744 metres to 3,514 metres. This will allow wide-body aircraft such as Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s to operate directly from Lucknow. With 42 non-stop destinations already on the map, including 11 international routes, Lucknow Airport is on track to become a globally connected aviation hub.

2. Lucknow’s First Glow Garden

Lucknow is adding a new after-dark attraction to its cityscape. The state capital is set to get its first Glow Garden at Joggers Park on Hardoi Road, with the Lucknow Development Authority fast-tracking the upgrade. Spread across 17.5 acres and backed by a ₹10 crore investment, the park is being reimagined as a night-time destination. Expect illuminated installations shaped like trees, birds, flowers and animals.

Infrastructure upgrades are also underway. The existing 800-metre jogging track is being repaired and elevated to tackle water-logging during the monsoon. The makeover extends to everyday wellness too, with an open gym, a yoga hut, a children’s play area and sculptures depicting 12 yoga postures.

3. Taj’s new luxury wing in Lucknow

Taj is strengthening its footprint in Lucknow with a refined expansion of the Taj Mahal Hotel in Gomti Nagar. The new addition brings 96 luxury rooms spread across 100,000 sq ft, designed as a extension of the existing five-star property in Vipin Khand.

Overlooking Ambedkar Memorial Park and the Gomti Nagar riverfront, the expansion mirrors the hotel’s Indo-classical character. A double-height colonnaded lobby sets the tone on arrival, while guest rooms open towards landscaped courtyards and gardens. Designed by CP Kukreja Architects, the project adds a refined architectural layer to Lucknow’s growing hospitality district.

4. Gomti Riverfront’s new Pedestrian Bridge

A statement pedestrian bridge is planned across the Gomti by Lucknow Development Authority, promising river views and serious photo potential. Backed by an investment of around ₹54 crore, the project will link both banks of the river. The 180-metre bridge, extending to 380 metres with ramps and platforms, is themed around the city’s most quoted line, Muskuraiye, aap Lucknow mein hai. Designed by Mumbai-based RWAMP Studio following a national architecture competition, the structure takes cues from Ahmedabad’s Atal Bridge.

With a generous 12-metre width, viewing decks, tensile roofing and layered night lighting, the bridge is shaping up to be one of the riverfront’s most eye-catching additions.

5. Rapid Rail linking Lucknow & Kanpur

The proposed Lucknow–Kanpur Regional Rapid Transit System has cleared major approvals, pushing the much-awaited project into implementation mode. Dubbed the NaMo Corridor, this high-speed line will run trains at up to 160 kmph, cutting travel time between the two cities to 40–50 minutes. The corridor will stretch roughly 70–75 km, including planned stations at Nayaganj, Unnao Railway Station, Bashiratganj, Nawabganj and Amausi.

Designed on the lines of the Delhi–Meerut RRTS, the project promises smart ticketing, automatic train doors and all-weather operation.

6. Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway nears completion

The 63-km Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway is nearing completion and is now expected to open by mid-2026. This six-lane greenfield and brownfield corridor will connect Shaheed Path in Lucknow to Azad Chowk near the Ganga Bridge in Kanpur. Along the route, over 46,000 trees are being planted as part of a large-scale plantation drive, aiming to create a shaded, scenic corridor rather than a bare concrete strip.

While a minor delay due to power line shifting has pushed timelines, the payoff is a faster, cleaner and far more pleasant inter-city commute. Less honking, more horizon.

7. IT City takes shape on Sultanpur Road

Lucknow’s IT City is shaping up as a serious future-forward address. Spread across 2,858 acres between Sultanpur Road and Kisan Path, the LDA-led township is being developed as a mixed-use hub for IT firms, startups, housing, commercial spaces and education. The standout feature is the city’s first grid road system, with wide, right-angled roads designed for easier navigation and smoother movement. Around 5,000 residential plots, multiple sectors with direct highway access and large parcels earmarked for industrial and commercial use are part of the plan.

With land pooling gaining momentum and road work set to begin soon, IT City is laying the groundwork for Lucknow’s next growth corridor.
