New promotion and degree conferral criteria have been recommended by a three-member committee, which will be applicable to all universities across Uttar Pradesh. Freshers will be granted promotion to the next year and their results for the 2020-21 session will be inferred on the basis of their performance in the second year. However, final year students will have to take their tests before being granted degrees. These suggestions have come up owing to the second wave of the pandemic currently hovering over UP.

For Universities following the semester system

The recommendations by the three-member committee instituted to work out the modalities of promoting students, shall be applicable to all UG & PG courses, across all universities of Uttar Pradesh. Universities that follow the semester system, it is recommended that they promote second-semester students based on their results of the previous semester. This rule will also be applicable to all undergraduate and postgraduate students who are currently in odd semesters.

For Universities following the annual scheme

For universities following the annual exam system, the committee has decided that all first-year students shall be promoted to second-year. The first-year results of such students will be prepared based on their performance in second-year, as and when they take those tests.

Further, universities that held exams for first-year students in 2020, shall prepare the second-year exam results based on the performance of the students in the 2020 exams. Thus, the students currently in the second year of their courses can be promoted to third-year.

Results to be announced by 31 August

However, students who are in their second year and did not appear for exams in 2020, will have to take them before they can be granted promotion in the next academic year. The questionnaire for such students will be prepared in MCQ format, hence, the exam will be Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) based.

Students in the final year of their courses will also be assessed through an examination before they are conferred with their degrees. All universities of UP, private or government, are directed to conduct exams before 13 August and declare results by 31 August.
