Lucknow Police Commissionerate has rolled out Project Safe Ride, a digital initiative aimed at streamlining public transport. Under the scheme, all auto-rickshaw and e-rickshaw drivers must undergo online verification and registration via the official police portal. Vehicle owners must upload documents including registration numbers, insurance papers, fitness certificates, and character verification certificates.
QR codes for real-time passenger checks
Once verified, each vehicle will receive a unique QR code that must be displayed on the windscreen. Passengers can scan this QR code to instantly access details of the driver and vehicle, ensuring transparency and enabling family members to track rides in emergencies.
Further, drivers must adhere to a prescribed dress code. Passengers are advised to board only those vehicles displaying verified QR codes and to report suspicious or non-compliant drivers via the traffic helpline number 9454405155.
Enforcement deadline: 31 August
The verification process, which began on July 29, runs until August 31. From September 1, vehicles without a verified QR code will be deemed illegal. A city-wide enforcement drive will follow, with penalties and potential seizure of non-compliant vehicles. Police also mandated that any change of driver must be updated online for fresh verification.
Opposition from E-Rickshaw Unions
Despite police assurances, e-rickshaw unions have criticised the initiative, citing complex verification processes and concerns over driver harassment. However, authorities maintain that strict compliance is essential for enhancing passenger safety and curbing unregulated transport.
